Job Overview A Physical Science Technician is a professional who assists scientists and engineers in conducting experiments and research in various fields of physical science, such as astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. They perform laboratory tests and experiments under the supervision of a scientist, collect and analyze data, maintain lab equipment, and prepare reports.
Qualifications - Associate degree in biological or chemical science.
- Must be able to lift or lower up to 50 pounds and sit for prolonged durations.
- Calibrates or installs technical equipment.
- Prepares samples for analyses.
- Prepares tables, maps, plots, or other data displays.
- Gathers technical data, statistics, or maps from external sources.
- No fewer than three (3) but no more than five (5) references from current and/or previous employers and/or (re)training program supervisors. Provide e-mail and telephone contact information for all points of contact.
Responsibilities - The Physical Science Technician (PST) within Public Health Command Europe (PHCE), Laboratory Sciences (LS), per LS SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure), shall be responsible for preparing sample container kit requisitions, processing samples, logging customer requests, sample, and test report information into the LIMS, providing exceptional customer service to PHCE customers, and working closely with the Lead PST to update laboratory management documents and perform other duties as assigned.
- In response to customer requests for services, the PST shall communicate with the PHCE customer throughout the request process, build, pack, and ship environmental sample collection kits in accordance with testing needs and analysis method in a timely manner, and complete the entire receiving, processing, and logging process of all samples and test results delivered to LS.
- The PST shall (i) ensure appropriate sizes of containers are ordered and picked up according to LS procurement SOPs so LS kit inventory is always stocked; (ii) use basic laboratory equipment for measuring and preparing containers; (iii) conduct operator maintenance of laboratory equipment; and (iv) work closely with the Lead PST to modify existing SOPs or other documents.
- The PST shall ensure samples are prepared for outsourced testing in a timely manner and samples are shipped only in accordance with the approved pricelist of an awarded contract/agreement and/or with the approval of the Contracting Officer Representatives (CORs) or Laboratory Deputy Director. The PST shall notify the COR and/or Billing Official (BO) of all outsourced sample submissions, shipments, and vendor testing delinquencies and provide information necessary for accurate invoice preparation.
- The PST shall complete and support PHCE safety and SHARP trainings and programs.
