The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT is Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology. In the department of "Surface Technology & Ablation" we have been collaborating with renowned companies for over 15 years to develop laser treatment techniques for surfaces and functional layers, including Thin Film Processing.
The research focus areas of the "Thin Film Processing" working group include:
- Additive manufacturing of electronic functional layers in the field of Printed Electronics for embedded sensors, microelectronics, hydrogen technology, and battery systems.
- Tribological, corrosion protection, and anti-adhesive coatings.
- 3D coating.
- Marking and cleaning.
- Development of suitable machinery and process control, as well as integration of thin-film processes into process chains.
The common thread among these research areas is the use of laser radiation for thermal post-treatment of functional layers and component surfaces to achieve desired functional properties. Besides process development and machinery technology, testing these solutions in close collaboration with potential industrial users is essential for realizing new products, innovative process chains, and high-performance material combinations.
