In Faculty II: Languages, Literatures and Media Studies at Trier University (Germany), the Department of
English Studies is looking to fill the following permanent position in the Language Teaching section of
the department:
Full time (100%) EAP / English Language Instructor
(American English) (m/w/d)
Start date: 1st October 2023
Salary: in accordance with TV-L E13.
Role description
The main task of this role consists in independently conducting practical language classes for a total of
sixteen hours per week and managing the associated organizational tasks. Classes will include practical
language classes focused on developing students’ oral and written competence in academic English
(anglophone literature and linguistics), advanced grammar, North American culture studies, phonology
of North American English, and translation from German into English, as well as the preparation and
assessment of work in these classes and the associated module exams.
A full-time position entails a working week of 39 hours. The position may be divided between two
part-time candidates, as long as their areas of expertise span these teaching responsibilities.
Candidate description
The requirements for employment derive from § 57 (2) and (3) and § 58 (3) of the RPL Higher
Education Act. Employment in this position requires a master’s degree or equivalent post-graduate
university qualification in a subject relevant to the position (e.g. English or American Studies, TESOL,
Applied Linguistics, German Studies) and 2.5 years of experience acquired since gaining this
qualification. In addition, a recognized language teaching qualification (e.g. in TESOL or TEFL) and
experience teaching English/EAP in Higher Education are expected. Candidates will also need to
demonstrate expert competence in English, several years of experience studying or working in North
America, and a good command of German. The candidate should also show willingness and ability to
collaborate in a team of language instructors.
