The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Background The Staff Unit International Cooperation serves the international cooperation of the AWI and represents the institute as partner in international projects dealing with research coordination or infrastructure development within the EU. Among the projects coordinated by this Unit is The Polar Research Infrastructure Network (POLARIN,
www.eu-polarin.eu), an Horizon Europe funded project that started in March 2024 and it is funded with 14,6 M€ over 5 years involving 52 partners from European and non-European countries.
POLARIN is an international network of polar research infrastructures and their services, aiming at addressing the scientific challenges of the polar regions. The network includes a wide array of complementary and interdisciplinary top level research infrastructures: Arctic and Antarctic research stations, research vessels and icebreakers operating at both poles, observatories, data infrastructures and ice and sediment core repositories. POLARIN will provide integrated, challenge-driven, and combined access to these infrastructures to facilitate interdisciplinary research on complex processes.
