The Role
The Director of Museum Services & Operations is a key leadership role responsible for the areas of Facility and Operational Excellence, Event Services, and Business Administration & Analytics (KPI Tracking). They will ensure that the building and grounds are well maintained, functional, safe, and the building’s legacy respected; the infrastructure for events and exhibitions is ordered and set up in a timely manner, including but not limited to FFE, Sound and Light; Support Services for operational and technology requests are implemented and completed according to urgency; and that there is an understanding and reporting of weekly/monthly audience flow and spending to continuously improve the museum´s operations and therefore the overall guest and staff experience.
Reporting to the General Manager of Fotografiska Berlin, the Director will deliver meticulous service and may be asked to serve as an alternate to the General Manager in their absence.
The Director Museum (Operational) Services will:
- Participate in the development, recommendation, and administration of policies, procedures and processes in support of facility operations, event services, procurement and optimal guest flow.
- Lead cross-functional, complex project management and implementation in the areas of building maintenance/engineering, housekeeping, security as well as for the information technology and audio-visual services which support the departments which operate in the museum (Exhibitions, Events and Programming, Food & Beverage, Retail & Guest Experience)
- Ensure a consistent and high standard all areas are maintained for orderliness, accessibility, safety, and compliance (e.g. Fire, Health & Safety, Security, Housekeeping etc.) including but not limited to developing maintenance manuals and schedules as well as an Emergency Management (Incident Command) System for essential personnel which requires after hour and 24/7 on-call for response as needed.
- Coordinates the preparation of the quarterly and annual Museum Services budgeting and forecasting processes with a clear understanding of and ability to manage complex P&L statements to achieve revenue and budget targets.
- Directs and administers procurement, fiscal management and implementation activities for the museum, exhibition installations, programming and private events as well as other projects as assigned.
- Engage in a variety of meetings and working groups to communicate information regarding services, programs, areas of opportunity, and/or other pertinent operational information as appropriate.
- Recruit, train, and motivate an effective Museum Services team including internal and external Facility Managers and Engineers, Event Operations Managers and helping hands, IT & AV specialists, Housekeeping, and Security.
- Successfully supervise, delegate, and inspire people to achieve performance goals.
- Be prepared to trouble shoot effectively and shift priorities and rebalance a portfolio of work as business needs change.
- Demonstrate a high level of intercultural competence, an understanding of the diverse identities and cultures and in developing and supporting inclusive teams.
- Aid in the development and coaching of staff members by being a consistent example as a leader on the floor.
Requirements
- Fluency in written and spoken German and a strong knowledge of English is required for the role.
- 8+ years’ progressively responsible, professional experience in a fast-paced, multi-purpose environment (including venue management, hospitality, museum, events management and event technical management etc.).
- While Fotografiska welcomes a range of backgrounds, completed studies or equivalent certifications in Facilities Management, Event Management, Business Administration, Event technical management or a related building construction field will prove useful in navigating this role.
- Strong skills in project management, contract management, budgeting, procurement, and building management/maintenance principles and practices are required for this role.
- Knowledge and interpretation of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes related to building operations.
