The
Institute of Sugar Beet Research (IfZ) associated with the Georg-August University is a nationally and internationally active research institution in Germany aiming to develop concepts for sustainable sugar beet production.
Within the framework of a research cooperation, the research group Cropping Systems and Yield Formation has an
immediate vacancy for a temporary position for three years for
Research Scientist (m/f/d) on the topic
" S ink-limitation of sugar beet yield formation – projections for future cultivation " with the possibility of graduation by a dissertation. Remuneration is based on the TV-L (EG 13, 65%).
Yield formation of sugar beet appears to be limited by the capacity to allocate carbon as sugar in the sink organ, the root. This fact is neither fully understood in terms of abiotic factors involved nor is it implemented into current models forecasting sugar beet yield. Moreover, climate change will come along with altered abiotic circumstances affecting carbon allocation, such as drought, atmospheric CO2-concentration. The goal of the study is to evaluate these aspects in field and greenhouse trials in order to implement the outcomes into yield predicting models. Therefore, the IfZ cooperates with the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and the Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Your tasks: - Establish a methodological concept for the aspects described
- Coordination of joint sugar beet field trails
- Conduction of measurements and data evaluation in field and greenhouse trials
- Computation and implementation of a module ‘sink limitation’ into yield models
- Preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations for conferences
Your profile: - excellent Master graduation in agriculture, horticulture, biology, computer science or related disciplines
- scientific understanding of plant development under climate change, esp carbon allocation
- experience and interest in modelling crop development
- interest in experimentation
- prerequisites are experience in statistics and programming
- very good command of spoken and written English
- driving license class B and willingness to travel
We offer: - A dedicated and young scientific team and a broad network
- Interdisciplinary research and intercultural work environment
- Divers experimental infrastructure
- Opportunity of advanced education
- Flexible working hours with the possibility of working partly in home office
