Scientific Assosiate in the Field of Laser Polishing of Metals in Aachen bei Fraunhofer Gesellschaft

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT is the world's leading contract research institute for the development and use of laser technology in industry and society. In the "Laser Polishing" group of the "Surface Technology and Material Removal" department, we are looking for a scientific employee to strengthen our interdisciplinary team in the field of laser polishing of metals.

At Fraunhofer ILT, we develop laser processes for the surface finishing of complex metal components, such as injection and die-casting tools, medical implants, and components for the automotive industry. Fraunhofer ILT plays a leading role in this field worldwide, as evidenced by the biennial World-Leading Conference on Laser Polishing.

What you will do

• Independent management and implementation of research and development projects for laser polishing of metals
• Focus area 1: Process development for further reduction of the achievable roughness by laser polishing
• Focus area 2: Analysis and characterization of the functional properties of remelted surface layers
• Presentation of results to customers and at national and international conferences, as well as active participation in external representation and acquisition of new projects
• Supervision of student assistants and scientific final theses

What you bring to the table

• Completed scientific university degree (TH, TU, U) in the field of physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a comparable course of study
• Experience in the field of laser material processing is advantageous but not mandatory
• Communication and teamwork skills, as well as a committed and independent way of working, initiative, and the ability to quickly and flexibly familiarize yourself with new topics
• Very good German and English language skills in spoken and written form

Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).

The weekly working time is 39 hours.

This position is also available on a part-time basis.

The position is limited to 3 years.
