Job Overview

We study the biology and role of macrophages and their crosstalk with other tissue resident immune cells in chronic inflammatory and autoimmune pathologies. This project is based on recent findings showing that group 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILC) regulate macrophage programs and the disease severity of lupus nephritis (manuscript in revision) and aims to shed light to the regulation and unique dynamics of ILC1 and macrophages, within the CNS and kidney in lupus, using state-of-the art approaches such as confocal microscopy, multicolor flow cytometry,
single cell technologies, transgenic lupus mouse models.

The project is highly interdisciplinary. Collaborations with internationally renowned researchers in the fields of Innate Immunity, Neuroimmunology, Nephrology and Chronic Inflammation are already in place. The environment at the DRFZ, the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology and the Institute of Microbiology of the Charité provides optimal training and support, with ample opportunities to participate in institutional, national and international conferences.

Required:

• master’s degree in Biology, Molecular Medicine or a Medical Diploma, or a PhD in the fields of Innate Cell Biology or Neuroimmunology
• strong, clear commitment to an academic career as a scientist or physician scientist
• love and passion for science, scientific curiosity
• willingness to work with murine models of human disease, basic experience with mouse handling
• excellent communication skills in English (written and oral)
• ability to work independently and as part of a team
• a background in innate immunity, myeloid or innate lymphoid cell biology and/or brain or kidney biology is a plus
• prior experience with at least one (for PhD students) or more (for Post Docs) of the following techniques is highly desirable: confocal microscopy, multi-parameter flow cytometry, mouse genetics and mouse handling, bioinformatics, cell culture and CRISPR/Cas-mediated genome engineering, epigenetics.
