R&D Sample Processes and Automation Lead in Penzberg bei Roche

Role Purpose

As theR&D Sample Processes and Automation Lead (m/f/d), you will be a member of the Biospecimen Acquisition and Management (BAM) Team within Diagnostics Standards & Interoperability (DSI). You will lead the complex sample management project for the new R&D building (LEAP) as the Sample Management workstream lead.

You will be the leading figure and key point ensuring that processes, workflows and tools are in place so that lab users receive their appropriate samples in a timely manner. You will lead staff (project staff, direct or in matrix) through technical and leadership expertise, ensure communication and collaboration with internal contacts and coordinate external partners/stakeholders.

Further tasks will include:

• Responsible for leading the LEAP Sample Management Stream

  • E2E responsibility to establish effective logistics processes for all samples (human + non-human) in LEAP building incl. necessary IT tool landscape delivery in cooperation with Digital Lab.

  • Management of Matrix team members (up to 20), interaction at interfaces, exchange with users, coordination of work packages and alignment of all DIA R&D units in Penzberg for the sample management concept in the LEAP building and beyond.

  • Business continuity planning for the ultra cold storage unit in conjunction with the Penzberg site plan.

• During project phase: Taking the ownership for the automation part of the new centralized Sample Management Storage (Sample Cube) in Diagnostics R&D Penzberg incl. technical responsibilities (e.g. FAT, SAT, Development of loading/unloading logics, Installation and Qualification strategy etc.).

• Generate meticulous, detailed, and thorough documentation during development, integration and formal testing activities.

• During operational phase: Taking the ownership of the new centralized Sample Management Storage (Sample Cube) in Diagnostics R&D Penzberg incl. technical responsibilities (e.g. first-level technical support, service management, leading a team (internal or external) operating the Sample Cube etc.).

• Utilize machine vision and other sensor technology (mostly camera-based imaging) for automation capabilities, detection accuracy and repeatability in ultra cold environments.

• Partner with equipment supplier to assemble, troubleshoot, debug, and qualify subsystems and components, and resolve design issues as needed.

• Responsible for defining the workflows of various labware within the Sample Cube, setting up the sample migration and compartmentalization strategy.

• As a Lead (project staff, direct or in matrix) you live everyday the Roche leadership commitments and act as a positive role model.

Your Profile:

• University degree (Bachelor / Master) and / or PhD in a technical or scientific discipline with several years of professional experience.

• Profound knowledge of Sample Management Processes, Technical Support and Logistics Processes.

• Highly experienced in Automation Projects in combination with lab experiences.

• Strong Project Lead / Project Management skills.

• Able to foster Stakeholder and Change Management.

• Leading personality with strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and strategic thinking.

• Ability to navigate within an organization with evolving needs, maintaining objectivity, respect for differences of opinion, fairness, open communication and consensus building skills.

• Courage to act pragmatically where necessary.

• Clear, concise and confident communication/messaging to different target groups and fluent English and German language skills.
