Specific Duties
We seek a team-oriented dynamic glider research manager to work with the PI (Prof. Eleanor Frajka-Williams) to establish, develop, and manage the glider laboratory at the Institute of Oceanography at Universität Hamburg.
The successful applicant will work in the research group: Experimental Oceanography (Prof. Dr. Eleanor Frajka-Williams) at Universität Hamburg, and work in close collaboration within the group of technical, scientific and administratie personnel, and with national and international partners. The successful applicant will assist in (or take the lead in) establishing and maintaining the Universität Hamburg glider lab (depending on experience level), with a forward-looking perspective of developing a larger glider facility.
Glider Research Laboratory:
- working with the PI to establish and maintain operational glider capacity, and to secure future funding
- working with the PI to develop a vision for glider operations and ocean observing infrastructure
- planning and supervising glider deployments (at home and abroad)
- maintaining (and, as needed, developing) software for glider operational use and post-processing, towards producing high-quality, FAIR datasets for further exploitation
- training students and postdocs in glider operations and piloting
Fieldwork and research activities:
- fieldwork preparation including instrument preparation, logistics and shipping for seagoing expedition
- participation in at sea research experiments lasting several weeks to 2 months
- assisting with or responsible for data processing, and quality control for oceanographic observations
- assisting in scientific research, data analysis and preparation of publications on oceans, climate and glider methodology for ocean observing
Requirements
- university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in natural sciences, mathematics, engineering or a related field

Verification of equivalent skills, experience, and qualifications for the last prerequisites will be conducted on hiring.
Required skills and personal qualities
- experience in glider operations: including maintenance, preparation of hardware and sensors, support infrastructure including IT and piloting, and interest to learn
- experience in planning, managing and conducting fieldwork in remote regions and on ships, and in processing oceanographic data including shipboard and glider-based observations, and interest to learn
- proficient in the computer languages Python and/or MATLAB, and interest in (or experience in) applying software best practices
- experience of working in high-risk areas (suspended loads, fire protection, occupational safety)
- interest in supporting oceanographic research
- excellent organisational skills, strong oral and written communication skills (English - required, German - desired)
- ability and aptitude to participate in expeditions at sea lasting several weeks (preferred)
- ability and interest to work both as part of a team and independently, with technical and scientific staff
