The Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel conducts research in the fields of energy management and energy systems technology. Around 450 scientists, employees and students develop solutions for the energy transition and generate around 38 million euros in revenue per year.
The energy transition in Germany is accompanied by a strong expansion of renewable energies. However, the expansion of offshore wind energy poses growing challenges for grid operators and electricity traders, which can lead to bottleneck situations in the electricity grid. One possible solution is flexibility based on storage systems that can absorb or supply energy in advance using forecasts for the next few hours and days. The aim is to investigate the extent to which ensemble forecasts offer added value for storage optimization compared to deterministic forecasts by better reflecting the uncertainties of weather forecasts.
We are looking for a student assistant (m/f/x) to support us in the implementation of the project on the optimal management of storage cascades with ensemble predictions of offshore wind farms. The project should end with the completion of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis in this subject area.
What you will do
- support with data preparation and analysis
- analysis of meteorological situations
- development of customized ensemble power forecasts for critical offshore wind situations and the optimal operation of large-scale storage facilities
- collaboration in the preparation of scientific publications
- support in the organization of project meetings and workshops
What you bring to the table
- You are studying energy economics, meteorology, physics, data science, engineering, applied mathematics or a comparable degree program
- You have already worked with probabilistic forecasts or have a strong interest in them and address this in your cover letter
- You have good knowledge of programming and data analysis (preferably in Python or Matlab) or optimization
- You are interested in the integration of renewable energies
- knowledge in the field of machine learning is an advantage
- fluent English proficiency
What you can expect
- An exciting and challenging job in the field of renewable energy integration with a meteorological focus
- In-depth familiarization with the topic and support from the team
- The opportunity to work independently on sub-aspects of the research project
- The opportunity to write a final thesis
- Flexible working hours based on your study schedule
- The option to work remotely
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity.
