Position Overview
The Director of Research & Development (R&D) has overall responsibility for atg L&M’s existing and future Flying Probe products. This position is accountable for the management of derivatives (of existing products), new development of the next generation of our systems, delivering project commitments (for standard products), ensuring design quality, and providing effective leadership to a multi-disciplinary technical team. The Director of R&D will thrive if organized and detail oriented; excels in technical program/project management; communicates with ease at all levels; is energized working in a fast-paced development environment and works well within a team structure to deliver results.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead overall R&D organization for Flying Probe Test Systems
- Organize, manage, and grow technical staff ensuring sufficient capacity/capability to meet aggressive business unit development plans
- Lead, develop, and engage a multi-disciplinary Engineering team across ME, EE/Controls, Software, and Systems Engineering
- Enables team members to take ownership of projects and to work independently
- Provides regular and accurate reporting on project status and resource capability
- Manages overall R&D engineering budget
- Effectively documents and transfers relevant product information to the operations team
- Directs engineering support resources including doc-control and tech-pubs
- Manages IP Strategy and our patent portfolio
- Effectively engages with peers/colleagues across the broader organization
- Key member of the company’s management team and as such contributing significantly to/providing thought leadership to the product portfolio management and technology roadmaps
- Work with Product Management, and Applications Engineering to strategize and implement new product features, as needed
- Support Applications and Field Service on customer issues, as needed
- Drive continuous improvement across R&D organization
- Introduce new tools and methods to improve development efficiency and efficacy
- Develop culture of growth and customer centricity, support the team through assessment, development opportunities, and coaching
Experience and Qualifications
- Degree in EE, ME, CS or similar engineering discipline;
- >8 years in full life cycle, cross-functional development of new products in capital equipment or industrial automation. Understanding of high-tech manufacturing environment with strong focus on customers and quality
- Strong engineering and debugging skills with prior hands-on experience in product development, and product engineering
- Broad understanding of mechanical/electrical/electronic assemblies, systems engineering, controls, and software with substantial expertise in at least one domain
