Definition
Under immediate supervision, is responsible for learning to install, repair and replace components of the electrical power distribution system; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work

Assists in the installation, repair, maintenance and removal of overhead and underground power lines, street light circuits and electric components;

Learns and follows appropriate safety procedures;

Pulls cable through ducts;

Learns to drive, operate and perform preventative maintenance (including fuel and lubricants) on vehicles and equipment used in power distribution work;

Learns to climb poles, work in confined spaces and use tools common to power distribution work;

Assists in testing cable and wire to detect broken circuits or incorrect connections;

Helps install, repair and remove poles;

Learns to splice and tape underground cable;

Cleans vehicles, equipment and job site after work has been completed.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of the twelfth school grade and six (6) months of experience in electrical construction, electrical renovation, electrical utility, or power distribution work. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth school grade requirement. Successful completion of a formal training program in the general principles of electricity or power distribution may substitute for the required experience.
By the completion of the probationary period, must possess a valid Class A commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing operation of vehicles with air brakes.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and will replace the names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 50% covering Electricity Principles, Work Safety, Reading Comprehension, Logic and Reasoning, and Information Ordering; and a Training and Experience Evaluation weighted 50%.
The exam is expected to be administered in July. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test. For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination.
