ECMWF
ECMWF is recruiting a Scientist - Climate Reanalysis within the Reanalysis team of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) which looks after our reanalysis products, ensures their quality, and prepares for the next generation products. Reanalysis touches on many aspects of modelling the atmosphere, land, and ocean, dealing with in-situ and satellite observations, data assimilation techniques, and generating products in an operational environment. As such, you will be working closely with your team members and many dedicated experts in other teams. You do not need to be an expert in all fields and will have an excellent opportunity to widen your view over time. Reanalysis has a vast range of applications and is used by many researchers, private companies, governments and authoritative international bodies such as the IPCC.
Together with the team you will perform diagnostics on the quality and health of our products where required and/or look after data assimilation aspects. These include the investigation of known issues or those peculiarities that come up during our weekly monitoring meetings. You will join ECMWF just before we start the full-scale production of our next reanalysis ERA6, which will be an exciting time. Another aspect of your work includes to look after online content, such as user documentation, reanalysis knowledge base articles and our global reanalysis catalogue entries. Reanalysis is exceedingly a popular data set for machine-learning. Recently there has been an explosion in the amount and maturity of such applications. You will not only have the opportunity to interact with this user community but also to be proactive in how to use machine-learning techniques to our advantage in future reanalysis products. Global reanalysis is performed inside ECMWF. However, a large part of C3S activities is outsourced and is procured and managed by ECMWF on behalf of the European Commission. Your role will include interacting with those involved, ensuring the delivery of quality products and services.
The main duties and responsibilities include:
ECMWF is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. It is an intergovernmental organisation created in 1975 by a group of European nations and is today supported by 35 Member and Co-operating States, mostly in Europe. The Centre’s mission is to serve and support its Member and Co-operating States and the wider community by developing and providing world-leading global numerical weather prediction. ECMWF functions as a 24/7 research and operational centre with a focus on medium and long-range predictions and holds one of the largest meteorological archives in the world. The success of its activities relies primarily on the talent of its scientists, strong partnerships with its Member and Co-operating States and the international community, some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, and the use of innovative technologies such as machine learning across its operations.
Over the years, ECMWF has developed a strong partnership with the European Union, and for the past seven years has been an entrusted entity for the implementation and operation of the Climate and the Atmosphere Monitoring Services of the EU Copernicus Programme, as well as a contributor to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. The collaboration does not stop there and includes other areas of work, including High Performance Computing and the development of digital tools that enable ECMWF to extend its provision of data and products covering weather, climate, air quality, fire and flood prediction and monitoring.
ECMWF is a multi-site organisation, with its headquarters in Reading, UK, a brand-new data centre in Bologna, Italy, and a large presence in Bonn, Germany.
The C3S Reanalysis Team is part of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and develops, maintains and safeguards the quality of state-of-the-art global climate reanalysis. In collaboration with C3S contractors, it also oversees the collection of historical satellite and in-situ observations and the development and production of regional reanalyses covering the European and Arctic domains. The production of climate reanalysis is an important activity at ECMWF with a long history. Reanalysis is an
