Who we are looking for
We are looking for an experienced HR professional to join our team as the People & Experience Manager, reporting directly to the COO, and part of the one-person-HR-team
You will help to shape the culture of the company and will have the chance to make a real impact on our team. You will attract and retain top talent, ensure compliance with German labor law, and play a critical role in ensuring that our team members are able to thrive in a supportive and innovative culture. We are a small team and this is a great opportunity to make a big impact, supporting the work we do to enable independent journalism.
If you are looking for a hands-on role in a mission-driven Berlin-based start-up, we’d love to hear from you!
What the role involves
- Developing, implementing and managing HR processes, policies and strategies (such as onboarding, offboarding, compensation and benefits, culture and engagement, etc). You will continuously evaluate and improve HR processes and procedures, ensuring they are aligned with industry best practices.
- Managing day-to-day and regular HR operations (such as employee contracts, payroll, etc).
- Developing, implementing and managing company-wide development and training programs and processes, ensuring this happens efficiently, consistently and that actions and recommendations are delivered to support employee growth and development.
- Manage the recruitment and selection process, including sourcing and screening candidates, conducting interviews, and coordinating with hiring managers, to ensure a fair and transparent process.
- Shaping and playing an active role in developing a supportive and innovative remote-first culture, including online and in-person events, ways of working and communicating.
- Acting as people support for the team, providing guidance and advice to people managers and employees on HR-related issues. Ensuring people managers and teams are empowered and heard and that individuals are able to access what they need to develop and grow, helping build a culture that is fair, inclusive and encouraging.
- Ensure compliance with German labor law, including employment contracts, benefits, and workplace safety. Keeping up to date with trends and legislation, ensuring we continue to adapt to new ways of working.
Ideally you…
- Have 3-5 years of experience in an HR Manager/HR Generalist role, ideally in a start-up & remote environment.
- You are structured, detail & process oriented with a hands-on mentality, always keeping the big picture in mind. You're not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get things done.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address HR issues effectively.
- Exceptional communication skills and a passion for people, you are open and enjoy building connections across remote teams.
- Strong overview of German labor law and regulations, ideally experience with working with 3rd party HR legal specialists
- Speak German and English fluently so that can confidently communicate in both languages.
