Trainee – International Relations in Heidelberg bei European Molecular Biology Laboratory

EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome.

The International Relations Team is a busy central unit responsible for strategically managing relations with EMBL member states and other major government and political stakeholders, including EU and EIROforum. The Team, lead by the Head of International Relations, also coordinates EMBL’s involvement in several ESFRI projects, and works with partners in other International Research Organizations to build broad alliances and coalitions in support of science and the scientific endeavor. As a trainee , you will be responsible for providing support to the team in the following areas:

• Conducting research and preparing memos on topics of relevance to the work of the team
• Helping with the organization of external and internal meetings and events
• Preparing briefings and presentations
• Writing minutes, summaries, reports and analyses
• Assisting with other tasks as required

Contract duration: 6 months, potentially extended up to a year

This is a training position suitable for a masters-level graduate looking to gain experience in international relations in the environment of an intergovernmental organisation. Excellent writing and organisational skills, attention to detail, as well as being able to multitask and deal with people in a friendly and diplomatic manner are essential. Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English and German is required. Fluency in another language is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of internet is required. Teamwork, demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural environment are required.
