The Hospital of the University of Munich, Germany, is one of the largest and most competitive university hospitals in Germany and Europe. 48 specialized hospitals, departments and institutions harbouring excellent research and education provide patient care at the highest medical level with around 11.000 employees.
Outline for the research project:
- Investigating the specific biological role of brain resident macrophages (microglia) and brain border associated macrophages (BAM) is of central interest for neurophysiology and will provide a basis for new treatments against neurodegenerative disease.
- As part of a priority program funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) we investigate new approaches for macrophage and BAM remodeling in the brain. Here, we pioneer transgenic models for microglia manipulation, use state of the art genetic read-outs, cell-based assays, histology and surgical techniques to establish new paradigms for microglia exchange in the intact brain. Our recent publications (e.g. Cell Systems, Cancer Res. or Neuro-Oncol.) and land-mark reports (e.g. Nat. Med.) underscore our ambition and capacity for impactful research in neuroscience.
We invite applications from candidates having a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in biology or biochemistry.
Previous experience in immunology or neuroscience is beneficial.
Team spirit, capability of independent self-motivated work, as well as very good English and communication skills are required.
We are looking for a person willing to intellectually advance the project, to use transgenic mouse-models for neuroscience, to explore brain physiology / pathology by (confocal) microscopy (and immunofluorescence), flow cytometry, (single cell and spatial) transcriptomics and to uncover new aspects in brain immunity.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, certificates and transcripts of academic degrees, a letter of motivation detailing the applicant‘s research interests and contact information for 2 references.
- A PhD-project with secured funding (salary scale according to German Research Foundation guidelines, 65% ) for 3 years is available and a project-start can be arranged for November 2023.
- Remuneration is based on the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector of the Länder (TV-L) including all allowances customary in the public sector.
