Under general direction, is responsible for advising the Police Chief on matters relating to media and public relations for the Division of Police; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Directs the activities of the public relations office within the Police Division;
Supervises professional staff engaged in the development and dissemination of informational and educational materials for the public and news media;
Provides direction and oversight to staff regarding responses to media inquiries and press releases on matters of public interest and concern relating to the Police Division;
Develops and coordinates the implementation of communication strategies designed to keep the public informed, build community trust, and promote a positive public image;
Prepares speeches, acknowledgements, and oral presentations for and to be delivered by the Police Chief;
Serves as a strategic advisor on public relations issues and policy development on such topics as media contact, public notifications, responses to community concerns, solicitation of public input, and talking points;
Oversees and coordinates the development and usage of social media sites to disseminate timely information directly to citizens;
Serves as a liaison to area commissions, neighborhood associations, special interest groups, and business organizations impacted by the Police Division.
Possession of a bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of professional experience in media, journalism, marketing, or public relations. Substitution(s): A master’s degree may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
