Academic research assistant (m/f/x)

Reference number W2413, salary in accordance with the German TV-L salary scale1, pay grade: E13 TV- L, duration

of employment: from 01-05-2024 until 30-04-2027, volume of employment: 75 % of standard working time.

Job requirements and responsibilities:

• The successful candidate will write a cumulative dissertation on the topic of comparative Bantu gender systems

within the context of the ANR-DFG-funded project "Macro- and micro-variation in Bantu grammatical gender

systems and their sociolinguistic correlates". The project description can be found here:

• They will take on course-work where needed in order to improve their research and/or language skills;

• They will present their findings to national and international audiences;

• They will be a pro-active project member and participate with minor roles in other activities related to the project.

Your academic qualifications:

• Completed university studies in general linguistics and/or African linguistics or is close to completion;

• Language skills (according to GER): English of the highest academic excellence (reading, speaking, and writing).

The pay grade assigned to an employee depends on their professional qualifications and the number of years of service. Each pay grade is
further subdivided into levels. Entry-level employees with no previous experience will initially be assigned a level 1 rating. After one year at
level 1 of the E10 pay grade, an employee will move up to level 2. After a further two years, the employee will move to level 3, etc.

The successful candidate will also be expected to:

• Beneficial for acceptance is experience in linguistic typology, comparative and descriptive Bantu linguistics,

sociolinguistics, quantitative methods/statistics for the language sciences, and/or fieldwork (in Africa or

elsewhere);

• We expect candidates to have excellent research skills (independent, motivated, a keen eye for detail and a passion

for learning) as well as good interpersonal skills (communicative, happy to work in a collaborative manner);

• Language skills (according to GER): valuable but not mandatory for applying are language skills in any Bantu or

other sub-Saharan language, French, or German.
