Role Summary

PLOS is a nonprofit, Open Access publisher empowering researchers to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. As Regional Publishing Development Lead, you will support our regional business strategies, which aim to grow PLOS’ profile and influence globally.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Global Publishing Development and working closely with the Regional Directors for Publishing Development and our partners in the regions, you will be responsible for supporting initiatives to engage communities in developing an equitable open research future, while sharing knowledge with functional teams across PLOS. This will include identifying potential partnerships and developing networks with the research, funder and publisher communities.

You will work closely with senior managers to contribute to creating a culture of transparency, collaboration and dynamic leadership across the organisation. You will leverage collaboration as a key strategy in accelerating our momentum while contributing to growing the portfolio’s top and bottom line and furthering PLOS’s catalytic mission in scientific communication.

Responsibilities

Strategy

Working with the Executive Director, Global Publishing Development, act as coordination point and internal lead for Africa regional strategic implementation plan
Working with the Executive Director, Global Publishing Development and the Regional Directors, Publishing Development to support strategic implementation plans for PLOS’ activities in Europe, Asia and LATAM.
Contribute to effective sharing of knowledge between Publishing Development Team and colleagues across PLOS
Keep abreast of current market trends and maintain a knowledge of the scholarly publishing, open science and competitor landscape, using this knowledge to inform the regional strategic plans
Provide insight on opportunities and developments in relation to policy, product development and the adoption of open research practices
Advocate for the benefits of greater openness in research to scientists, university and academy leaders, and policy makers

Financial and Business Leadership

Manage budgets/expenditure for regional activities
Keep abreast of regional publishing trends and work collaboratively with colleagues in Editorial, Open Research, Outreach, Publishing and Sales to drive authorship, readership and institutional engagement

Cross-functional working and collaboration

Work with managers across the organisation to leverage wider strategic opportunities across regions
Contribute to the development and growth of global cross- and trans-disciplinary networks to grow PLOS’ profile and reputation
Build collaborative cross-functional relationships to effect knowledge transfer and ensure strategic plans meet the needs of internal stakeholders
Build collaborative relationships with research communities, policy-makers, funders and institutions
Promote a culture built on teamwork, engagement and the highest level of personal ethics and cross-functional collaboration
Represent and promote PLOS as a thought leader across the scientific, scholarly communication, and higher education sectors through attendance and speaking at key meetings and events

Knowledge and Skills

High level of multicultural competency with experience of working with teams across countries and cultures
Knowledge and understanding of scholarly publishing practice and policy and of the markets for scholarly scientific and medical journals
Proven track record in an academic/scholarly publishing environment;
Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of colleagues in peer-to-peer relationships
Organizational skill to monitor resource allocation and budgets to agreed plans, reporting and acting according to changing circumstances
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) in English. Additional language skills are an asset
Strong interpersonal skills and empathetic approach
Wide interest in researchers and scientists and demonstrated ability to engage in productive relationships with them
Dedication to open access and transforming scholarly communication
