The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) is a regional treaty aiming at achieving favourable conservation status of the populations of migratory waterbirds. The AEWA Secretariat is administered by UNEP and is responsible for advancing the agenda of the Agreement and supporting the implementation of its provision in close cooperation with governments, UN entities and other organizations.
This post is located in the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat - Science, Implementation and Compliance Unit at the Bonn duty station. Under the overall supervision of the AEWA Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Head of Science, Implementation and Compliance Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Coordinates the development and implementation of the species action and management framework under AEWA: facilitates the development, revision and/or retirement of AEWA International Species Action Plans (ISAPs); coordinates the development of relevant criteria and guidance in consultation with the AEWA Technical Committee; facilitates and coordinates the establishment of AEWA International Species Working and Expert Groups and oversees their operations (including meeting organisation, i.e. agenda development, participant identification, preparation and review of documents and presentations and meeting facilitation).
2. Coordinates budget and funding activities in relation to priority AEWA International Species Action Plans (fundraising, programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (donor agreements, small-scale funding agreements, work plans and project budgets) in cooperation with donors and implementing partners. Administers, prepares and monitors the budget and financial cycles of various project activities, including UMOJA administration.
3. Assists with the overall policy development under the Agreement as part of the input delivered by the Science, Implementation and Compliance Unit: provides substantive support to the AEWA Technical and Standing Committees (TC and StC) as well as the AEWA Meeting of the Parties (MOP) including the preparation of various written outputs (Draft Resolutions, decision documents, background papers, reports and inputs to publications).
4. Assists with the recruitment of new Contracting Parties to the Agreement.
5. Represents the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat at international and national meetings, workshops and other fora, as assigned; provides expert guidance and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
6. Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
7. Performs any other duties as may be assigned.
PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge of key issues related to the conservation of migratory birds is beneficial. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to develop sources for data collection. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.
