We are looking for a new Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) to join us in the project “Acoustic PFC droplet vaporisation simulation in blood vessels and artificial intelligence-based optimisation of droplet dose for BBB opening”. The objective of this position is to study the behavior of ultrasound-activated droplets, and develop models to study the interaction with the surrounding soft tissue cells. The application area of the modelling is the particulate flow behaviour during the blood brain barrier opening. The position is part of the newly established Marie S. Curie doctoral network SCALE, “Industry empowerment to Multiphase fluid dynamics simulations using Artificial intelligence and Statistical methods on modern hardware architectures at Scale”, with collaboration partners in Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The successful applicant is expected to write a PhD thesis based on this work, which will be supported accordingly from our side.
Your primary responsibilities:
- Derivation of mathematical and physical models to describe the ultrasound-induced bubble dynamics and acoustic droplet vaporisation.
- The application of machine learning techniques to describe collective effects of bubble col-lapses and interactions with nearby soft tissues.
- To validate the models against relevant experimental data.
- Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in the C programming language.
- Secondment and collaboration with an industrial partner (Precision Accoustics).
- Cooperation with our collaborators and researchers within the Doctoral Network.
Requirements profile: - MSc degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline.
- Proven track record in working with physical problems and numerical methods.
- A strong interest in computational fluid dynamics.
- Coding experience in C, C++, Fortran or Python in the context of numerical modelling is highly desirable.
- Fluent command of written and spoken English is required.
- You must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Ger-many for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
The successful candidates will receive a salary including mobility and family allowance (if applicable) and will be employed according to the rules for Doctoral Candidates (DCs) in a EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network and the specific regulations of each institution.
Gross salary without employer´s social contribution and without family allowance:
The employee’s gross salary will be approximately 3269 € per month (without family allowance) or approximately
3816 € per month (with family allowance), depending on the year of employment and the choice of health insurance. A family allowance will be paid in case the researcher has a family. ‘Family’ means persons linked to the researcher by marriage (or a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country where this relationship was formalised) or dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher.
