Full Stack Developer for the Roberta Initiative in Sankt Augustin bei Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems

At Fraunhofer IAIS, more than 360 employees research and develop individual solutions for the integration and analysis of data for our funding bodies and customers from industry. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, multimedia content analytics, information integration and enterprise modelling and analysis are the focal points of our work. With our Roberta initiative and the associated Open Roberta platform, we have been inspiring young people in particular, but increasingly also adults, for science and technology since 2002 and turning them into responsible shapers of their future - playfully, sustainably and hands-on!

The Open Roberta Lab is Europe's largest open source platform for visual programming of hardware systems in education. At Fraunhofer IAIS, we develop and host the Open Roberta Lab for users from over 100 countries who use it to program various robots and microcontrollers. In collaboration with leading partners from the technology industry, we are constantly expanding the Open Roberta Lab with new, innovative hardware and adding exciting features to the platform for more programming fun.

Our team works closely together. We strive for practical solutions that are directly implemented in schools, coding hubs, maker spaces and other educational initiatives. For this, we need a full-stack developer who can dive deep into the system and develop it conceptually as part of the team. You will use the latest technologies to design and implement high-performance solutions for a constantly growing number of users, without forgetting usability for our young user group.

What you will do

Further development of the Open Roberta Lab, including:

• Front- and back-end systems
• Hardware-related software development, in particular the integration of further hardware systems in the Open Roberta lab
• Further development of the Open Roberta Simulation (especially working with the stack-machine-code)
• Maintenance of the server architecture
• Expansion of the relational database

What you bring to the table

• Completed academic university studies (master's degree / diploma) in computer science or a related discipline
• Very good knowledge of software development with JavaScript, Java, C, Python, TypeScript,
• Very good knowledge of server architectures, in particular Docker and Jetty knowledge
• Experience in building and operating open source systems
• Very good experience with database systems (SQL)
• Very confident with development tools such as git, Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket
• Ability to adopt the user perspective to create applications for optimal user experience
• Experience working in collaborative and agile projects
• You're passionate about research and want to apply your findings to application projects as well
• You are curious, courageous and seek solutions. You enjoy talking about your visions in a team and dream of providing more people with easy ways into programming
