The Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics at Hamburg University of Technology is interested in hydrologic processes, environmental and climate related challenges. We focus on creating new knowledge through research and innovation, developing new measurement tools and predictive capabilities to provide accurate understanding of multiscale processes occurring near Earth’s surface. For this, we combine theory, state-of-art modelling and experiments using cutting-edge tools such as high-resolution imaging, satellite remote sensing, artificial intelligence, big data processing, and computational fluid dynamics.
We are looking for a researcher in the field of geoinformatics & geo-computation to utilize state-of-the-art Machine Learning Algorithms and modelling combined with various programming tools (e.g. Python or R) for processing large datasets related to soil and climatic parameters. The aim is to develop innovative solutions for predictive mapping of state and change of soil parameters and functions under different climate change scenarios. Concepts and processes such as soil degradation, soil salinization, and soil health will be central to this project.
YOUR TASKS
- Conducting independent research as outlined above with a focus on soil processes
- Combining hydrology, big data analysis and computational tools to predict soil processes e.g. salinization on continental scale
- Publishing in peer-reviewed journals and attending scientific meetings
- Contributing to teaching activities and supervision of other students
- Helping with any other research and teaching related duties as may be deemed reasonable by the Head of the Institute
- Visiting other universities and institutes for research collaboration if necessary
YOUR PROFILE
- Completed university degree in one of the following fields: Environmental engineering, water management, civil engineering, hydrology, or related disciplines
- Proven records of large-scale modelling for soil processes
- Excellent academic results and recognitions
- Excellent communication skills in English (oral / written)
- Demonstrated experiences with computational hydrology
- Previous experience with remote sensing, data mining, geospatial data assimilation and machine learning will be an advantage
- Committed to international exchanges, teamwork, students’ supervision if necessary
OUR OFFER
- We offer the opportunity for scientific qualification towards a PhD
- A dynamic, stimulating, international and multi-disciplinary work environment
- Access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities
- Possibility to collaborate with internationally recognized scientists in other universities
- High level of personal responsibility and freedom in your work
