You will be part of the Banknote Circulation Division in the Directorate Banknotes. Our Directorate has around 70 staff working to ensure that euro banknotes are an efficient means of payment and are resilient to counterfeiting threats. We formulate policies and coordinate activities within the Eurosystem and with third parties, in particular regarding the development, production, distribution and subsequent handling of banknotes.
In your role as a Banknote Issuance Expert, you will be part of a team of around 16 members of staff responsible for the Eurosystem’s issuance and anti-counterfeiting policies and activities. Our work includes determining annual banknote production volumes, managing the Eurosystem’s banknote stocks, operating IT systems and databases, performing counterfeit analyses, conducting surveys and research and developing cash-related policies, especially in the context of the Eurosystem’s cash strategy. We work closely with experts from national central banks and the European Commission as well as stakeholders such as banknote equipment manufacturers and national counterfeit analysis centres.

As a Banknote Issuance Expert you will:
- manage the Currency Information System, in which all relevant data on the circulation, stocks and processing of euro banknotes and coins are stored;
- contribute to work related to the Eurosystem’s cash strategy, in particular as regards policies on monitoring and maintaining access to cash;
- work on scenarios for the possible issuance of a new series of euro banknotes;
- support the procurement process for the selection of suppliers for surveys on the use of cash;
- draft high-quality letters and policy documents on various issuance-related topics and present such documents in internal and external meetings.

Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a master’s degree or equivalent in economics, law, econometrics, science, technology or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
- in addition to the above, a minimum of three years’ professional experience in the field of banknote issuance policies;
- strong analytical and drafting skills, experience in applying such skill for the preparation of policy documents and the ability to summarise and present information for the target audience;
- good knowledge of the MS Office package, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- experience actively participating in meetings and collecting and reflecting contributions from various stakeholders;
- knowledge of quantitative and statistical tools and techniques for analytical purposes;
- experience managing the user requirements of large IT systems;
- experience carrying out research or working on large analytical documents independently.
