Your team
One of the tasks of the ECB is to ensure that Europe’s banks are in good shape to perform the important role they have in the economy of euro area countries. We carry out this task as part of a system of European banking supervision called the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM).
We supervise the euro area’s largest banks, working alongside supervisors in all euro area countries in Joint Supervisory Teams (JSTs). Our supervisors supervise individual banks on a day-to-day basis, conduct on-site inspections in banks’ premises or specialise in diverse areas such as internal governance, credit risk, capital markets, operational risk, climate risk, cyber risk, business models, internal models, capital planning, crisis management, stress testing, and supervisory policy and methodologies. Based on the relevant regulations, our teams also grant authorisations to supervised institutions and assess the suitability of members of their management bodies (fit and proper assessment). Where relevant, we also enforce regulations or sanction banks for critical shortcomings. A dedicated team develops our supervisory IT systems and communication tools, leveraging artificial intelligence.
Besides identifying risks and supervisory priorities, we monitor the consistency and effectiveness of our supervisory actions with a view to continuous improvement.
We are keen to draw on fresh perspectives and motivation and are seeking to fill approximately 100 traineeship positions in various fields.
Your role
As a trainee you will be assigned to one of the ECB’s business areas where you will gain hands-on experience by participating in the team’s day-to-day supervisory activities.
For example, you may work on some of the following tasks:
- participating in risk meetings with supervised banks or banking supervisors;
- assessing the impact of macroeconomic developments on the risk profile of banks;
- scrutinising reports provided by banks and checking for undesirable developments;
- checking whether banks are complying with supervisory demands and regulatory requirements and benchmarking them;
- automating repetitive data processing tasks;
- collecting and scrutinising data and producing tables, charts and reports;
- combining theory and practice by working on projects related to the implementation of supervisory practices and standards;
- contributing to one of the key supervisory processes, e.g. authorisations, supervisory technology or horizontal analyses.
Working as a trainee in banking supervision offers you a unique opportunity to gain first-hand practical experience and knowledge of the workings of the ECB and how Europe’s largest banks are supervised.
You will be working in an inspiring environment alongside international experts who look forward to benefiting from your enthusiasm and fresh academic knowledge.
The traineeship will also provide you with a number of learning opportunities, such as training courses, and workshops, enabling you to acquire an in-depth insight into a variety of areas. Furthermore, our international environment will enable you to hone your communication and collaboration skills while contributing to memos, decisions and presentations for, and interacting with, a variety of internal and external audiences.
You will be part of a diverse team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of the people of Europe.
You will be assigned a mentor to guide you in developing your skills.
By being part of our active trainee community, you will expand your network and swiftly become acquainted with all that the ECB and Frankfurt have to offer.
