Embark on a journey of strategic influence as the Qualified or Senior Patent Attorney for the new Diagnostics Customer Area Near Patient Care (NPC) at Roche. In this critical role, you will navigate the world of patents, providing comprehensive IP support to protect our innovations and fuel our business goals. The opportunity
As a member of the NPC IP Team, you will independently and in alignment with your manager
be responsible to lead and provide comprehensive IP support for at least one technology/product area within the NPC product and solution portfolio which includes hardware, diagnostic tests and also digital IT solutions
be responsible for drafting, filing, and managing patent portfolios in strategic alignment with business decisions, needs and priorities, including maintenance and/or defense of EP and foreign patent filings e.g. in oppositions (all of the above directly by yourself or supervising outside counsel)
ensure the protection of our innovations, Freedom-To-Operate and market exclusivity during the life cycle of our products and support colleagues in various functions such as Research & Development (R&D), Medical Affairs, Legal and Partnering
provide IP support for research and development projects, serving as a trusted advisor to the management and a valued project team member
provide clear and informed counseling and advice to stakeholders engaged in R&D, partnering, and commercialization activities and represent the IP department in a cross-functional Lifecycle Team of the NPC organization
render legal opinions with respect to patentability, validity, and freedom to operate and/or provide support to a legal team drafting such legal opinions
devise patent strategies and advice, and align the strategies with the business and implement them accordingly
train and mentor colleagues on IP matters
assist and/or conduct IP due diligence assessments and counseling based on these assessments, including freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analysis, and risk evaluation and mitigation, and support contract projects and litigation activities, and
contribute to co-create the new NPC IP department and support work on process improvements within the IP department
Who you are
Qualified European Patent Attorney with an advanced degree in physics, (bio)computer science, electrical engineering, biotechnology, or a similar field. Qualification as German or Swiss national Patent Attorney would be desirable
Excellent knowledge of German patent law, UPC, US law and the most important national patent laws as well as international conventions such as EPC, PCT and knowledge of related fields of law like contract law and licensing
At least five years of practical experience in a patent law firm or in an industrial patent department
Experience in patenting medical device or diagnostics technologies preferred
Pro-active and confident individual who is committed to driving change and to work as a team player in a global team
Flexibility to handle numerous divergent responsibilities simultaneously
Strong analytical and negotiating skills, strong business knowledge and the ability to find creative solutions that support business objectives and safeguard/ enforce the interests of the NPC Customer Area.
Strong business acumen so as to serve as a partner to the executive leadership
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with high cross-cultural sensitivity
Fluent in written and spoken English,German is a plus
Ability to travel, including internationally
