Under administrative direction, is responsible for assisting in the overall management of the Division of Police; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Assists in the organization and direction of all resources of the Division of Police for the most efficient discharge of its duty to preserve the peace, protect persons and property, and obey and enforce all ordinances of the City of Columbus and all criminal laws of the State of Ohio and the United States of America;
Directs the work of one or more Police Deputy Chiefs who are responsible for the management of police subdivisions;
Administers disciplinary procedures; directs, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff; handles employee concerns and problems;
Develops research and strategic planning, and provides recommendations to the Chief on a variety of police issues and concerns to develop new and innovative solutions, programs, policies, directives, and procedures;
Prepares and oversees the preparation of reports of a broad administrative and/or technical nature;
Oversees the development and implementation of major initiatives in the Division of Police;
Develops, monitors, and modifies police programs in order to meet the needs of the community and the Division of Police;
Develops and administers Division of Police priorities and policies; advises on the development of ordinances and regulations; reviews operational activities within the subdivisions;
Monitors preparation and administration of annual budget; recommends priorities for Capital Improvement Projects and major equipment purchases;
Develops a staffing plan within the Division of Police;
Ensures proper equipment maintenance and usage; organizes and directs resources for the most efficient discharge of its duty to protect persons and property and obeys and enforces ordinances of the City of Columbus;
Attends conferences and meetings; stays abreast of best practices, new developments, and other advancements within the field of law enforcement;
Coordinates activities of the Division of Police with that of other divisions within the City and with other governmental and private agencies and the public;
Represents the Division of Police to external agencies;
May serve as acting Police Chief in his or her absence.
Possession of a bachelor’s degree and seven (7) years of managerial experience including policy formulation, adoption of best practices, implementation of leadership initiatives, and direction of a large staff (twenty-five (25) employees or more) through subordinate supervisors.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Some positions may require possession of a valid OPOTA certification by completion of the probationary period.
