199/2024 Research Assistant for pursuing a doctorate on Contact Heat Transfer (m/f/d) bei Otto von Guericke Universität Magdeburg
Vacancy Notice 199/2024
Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) is an internationally oriented and regionally networked university with a strong research profile.
The Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering seeks to fill the following vacancy -subject to the allocation of funds- at the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering:
Research Associate for pursuing a doctorate on Contact Heat Transfer (m/f/d)
Salary scale:
13 TV-L
Date commencing: next possible date
Fixed term: 4 years
Contract status:
100 %
We are a university with a focus on engineering and natural sciences as well as economics, human sciences and medicine. We offer excellent study and working conditions to 13,000 students from Germany and abroad as well as approx. 3,000 employees.
At the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering (), the successful candidate will be responsible for the research work foreseen in the DFG project “Contact heat transfer and heat conduction in packed beds of edged particles”.
This project is part of the Transregio Collaborative Research Center (CRC/TRR 287) “BULK-REACTION: Reacting and moving granular assemblies with gas flow”. The CRC/TRR of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and Ruhr University Bochum aims at developing a completely new DEM/CFD framework for the indicated particle systems and processes. Goal of the specific project is to present new methods for the computation of particle-particle heat transfer for non-spherical (polyhedral) particles, based on the effective thermal conductivity of respective packed beds.
It will have experimental and computational parts: measurement of effective conductivities of packed beds; measurements of thermal mixing of monodisperse and bidisperse packings in a small rotary drum; particle and particle system characterization by, among others, X-ray µ-CT; numerical simulations of packed bed conductivity; numerical simulations of mechanical mixing/segregation and thermal mixing in the rotary drum; correlation for the effective thermal conductivity of binary mixtures of particles; calibration of the transcription of effective thermal conductivities to interparticle heat transfer coefficients, especially for binary mixtures of particle fractions that differ in size, shape or material. Strong interaction within the CRC/TRR is necessary.
Requirements profile:
- Above-average university degree (master/diploma) in chemical engineering or similar
- Ability and motivation to cutting-edge research that will involve experiments, simulations, theoretical assessment and correlations on heat transfer in particle systems
- Ability and motivation to work in an environment that will set high standards, requiring individual excellence as well as close cooperation towards common goals
- Fluency and ability to present/publish in English
