A postdoc position is available between the laboratories for Cellular Protein Biochemistry at the Technical University of Munich and the Department for Molecular Machines and Signaling at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry.
Membrane proteins make up one third of the human proteome. They are major drug targets, and their mutations cause numerous severe human diseases. Despite these key roles in biology and medicine, our structural insights into membrane proteins and their biogenesis remains limited.
THE PROJECT: The major goal of this project is to provide structural and functional insights into membrane protein chaperone machineries. It will span disciplines and combine cryo-EM structural biology in Prof. Brenda Schulman’s lab at the MPI biochemistry with cell biological studies in Prof. Feige’s lab at TUM. Recent examples of our work include: Miller-Vedam, Bräuning, Popova et al., eLife, 2020; Baek et al., Nature, 2023; Zanotti, Coelho et al., Science, 2022; Bloemeke et al., EMBO J, 2022.
YOUR PROFILE: You should hold a PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or related fields. Profound expertise and a publication track record in membrane protein cryo-EM is required. Knowledge in mammalian cell biology, is a benefit, but can also be acquired during the project, including recent techniques in genome editing, light microscopy and FACS-based assays. As such, the candidate will develop broad expertise by combining advanced structural and functional studies during the project.
THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE POSITION: This project is placed between TUM and MPI biochemistry, two world-leading research institutions. We are offering excellent working conditions and international research environments. The salary is in accordance to the Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder (TV-L E13/100%). The earliest starting date is September 2023. Only applications received until July 15th 2023 will be considered.
The application should contain a letter of motivation (detailing the candidate’s membrane protein cryo-EM expertise), a CV including publication list, (degree) certificates, and at least two possible references. Please send your application as a single pdf-document by email to:
