The mission of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is medical translation: transferring biomedical research findings into novel approaches to personalized prediction, prevention, diagnostics and therapies and, conversely, using clinical observations to develop new research ideas. The aim is to deliver relevant medical benefits to patients and the population at large. The BIH was founded in 2013 and is funded 90 percent by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and 10 percent by the State of Berlin. Computational Scientist (f/m/d)

The workgroup of Prof.Dr. Julia Polansky at the Berlin Institute of Health Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is researching the epigenetic mechanisms of T cell differentiation during health and in disease. Our aims are delineating new diagnostic tools and treatment strategies using targeted epigenetic editing approaches. In this endeavor, we generate multi-omics data-sets including genomic/epigenomic/transcriptomic data, which require extensive computational analyses.

Your job description:

• Comprehensive comparative analysis of complex genome-wide (epi)genetic profiles of biological samples (including data sets from DNA methylation analysis, ChIP-seq, RNA-sequencing and genotyping)
• Select, benchmark and evaluate existing analytic methods and tools with a focus on epigenetic data
• Develop innovative analytic approaches if existing methods are inadequate
• Process large omics data sets and identify and efficiently integrate public data resources relevant to our biomedical questions,
• Contribute to data management
• Contribute to the design of experiments, translate biomedical questions into bioinformatics projects, foster communication between bioinformatics professionals and life science researchers

Your profile:

• Degree in life science / informatics / statistics or other natural science discipline, with in-depth research experience in computational life science; relevant PhD is a strong plus
• Excellent understanding of computational methods for sequencing data analysis and the use of public data resources required; understanding of wet-lab protocols is a plus
• Very good programming skills in R and/or Python or similar expected; good knowledge in bash and experience with High Performance Computing is a plus
• Experience in working with and troubleshooting academic open-source software packages is essential; experience with single cell and/or methylation data is a strong plus
• Excellent communication abilities with both bioinformatics professionals and life science researchers needed; experience in interdisciplinary teams and taking a lead in multi-author publications are a plus
• Experience with assisting/guiding other scientists (in qualification) in their statistical analyses
• Ability to work independently as well as part of an interdisciplinary and culturally diverse team
• Ability to work in a self-organized manner
• Fluent in written and spoken English
