Definition
Under general supervision, is responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, inspecting, repairing, and replacing water metering systems, backflow devices, and related items; performs related duties as required.

Installs and maintains water metering systems while ensuring compliance with City codes;

Investigates customer water usage and performs water use surveys to ensure compliance with Department of Public Utilities rules and regulations;

Inspects, troubleshoots, and performs corrective maintenance on water metering systems;

Investigates and tests water metering systems in response to billing complaints, leaks, or pressure problems;

Tests, repairs, and replaces water metering systems, backflow devices, and related items;
-
Advises customers, contractors, and plumbers regarding rules and regulations concerning water-metering systems, backflow devices and related items;

Inspects new water service lines, metering systems, pits, existing private plumbing, backflow preventers, and low-pressure sustaining devices for booster pumps for compliance with division regulations;

Maintains work records and completes reports on services performed and prepares/maintains accurate work records by utilizing the backflow database management system;

Operates City vehicles to perform duties;

May plan, revise, and update meter reading routes and read water meters while recording amount used by residential and commercial consumers;

May enter readings or service order information in computerized mobile systems;
-
May act as a lead worker or crew leader and train water service personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of experience assisting or performing the installation, maintenance, or repair of meters in utility systems, water or gas distribution maintenance, or plumbing, pipefitting, irrigation system work or closely related work. Substitution(s): Possession of a valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) State of Ohio Class I or higher Water Distribution certificate may substitute for 1 year of experience.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Some positions may require a valid Operator Training Committee of Ohio Backflow Certification.

The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 100% covering meter reading, plumbing, tool identification, safety, information ordering, logic and reasoning, problem sensitivity, and communication skills.
The exam is expected to be administered in July. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test. For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination.
