The Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE - Sustainable Architecture for Finance in Europe - )) promotes scientific research, transfer work to the public and independent policy advice on all aspects relating to the structure and functioning of the financial system. It aims to contribute to strengthening a sustainable and resilient financial system that drives innovation and serves the needs of the economy and citizens. Researchers from the fields of economics, law, and political science collaborate at SAFE.
Your tasks:
The doctoral student will be involved in the day-to-day activities of the SAFE Research Data Center. The activities include administering financial research databases, supporting SAFE researchers in identifying appropriate data sources, and handling data sets. Besides, the doctoral student will contribute to the workshops that the Data Center regularly offers. These workshops cover topics that are of general interest to researchers at SAFE and Goethe University and to Goethe University’s students. A project team at the Data Center collects and processes historical data on European firms and stocks. The doctoral student is encouraged to contribute to the project of building a German historical finance database and to the further development of the Data Center. Such activities may include providing researchers with pre-processed research data sets and tools to implement new methods (e.g., machine learning) in empirical research.
Your profile:
- Successful candidates have acquired (or are about to complete) a master’s degree in finance, economics, econometrics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field with good grades and have a research agenda for a PhD in Finance. The ideal candidate has already completed or is currently completing the qualification phase of a PhD program.
- Programming skills in software like Stata, Python, or R are required. Learning and improving programming skills on the job is possible. Experience with database systems is a plus.
- Skills in statistics and numerical methods are a plus.
- Ideal candidates have implemented their first empirical research project(s) and are strongly motivated to conduct high-quality empirical research.
- Good English language skills are required. German language skills are very welcome.
- Candidates should work independently and be willing to familiarize themselves with new topics and methods, including machine learning and handling large data sets.
We offer: We offer PhD supervision by a SAFE (bridge) professor. Possible fields are, for example, Financial Intermediation, Financial Markets, Household Finance, Macro Finance, Law & Finance, Green/Sustainable Finance, or Finance and Data Science. For more details, please see .
We offer also the infrastructure of a modern research center with excellent contacts to the scientific community and the finance industry. You will work in a very attractive working environment in the House of Finance at Goethe University and with an enthusiastic team of colleagues. Compensation will be up to 70% of a full-time position in accordance with the standards of the public services wage agreement of the State of Hesse (TV-H E 13). The employment contract has an initial duration of up to 3 years, depending on the state of qualification.
