An der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen Stiftung Öffentlichen Rechts – Geographisches Institut ist ab dem 01.03.2024 eine Stelle als
PhD student (all genders welcome)
- Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L -
in Teilzeit mit 75% der regelmäßigen wöchentlichen Arbeitszeit zu besetzen. Die Stelle ist 36 Monate.
The position is part of a ANR-DFG funded French-German research initiative and forges a partnership of four research institutes in Germany (Göttingen & GFZ Potsdam) and France (IFP Energies Nouvelles, Paris & Université de Rennes). It is a 36 month fix-term position starting on 1st of March 2024. The salary is based on the German pay grade system for public servants TV-L E13 (75 %). The position is intended for the qualification of young academics and offers the possibility of a doctoral degree.
Your p roject : Catastrophic floods and sustained droughts will be increasing as our climate changes. It is uncertain how this change will impact the watersheds of major rivers during hydrological extremes. In this PhD you will develop methods to measure
landscape erosion and sediment transport driven by surface and groundwater . To do this you will deploy a network of seismic and hydrological stations to constrain both surface fluxes and change in subsurface saturation within upland catchments in the Eifel region of Germany. There will be a close collaboration with a paired French PhD student who models the interaction between the surface and the subsurface. This will involve several field missions and an extended period of knowledge exchange at the partner institutes. You will turn seismic data into metrics of shallow and deep subsurface water dynamics, into stream discharge and river sediment transport rates. The expected outcome is a routine and unprecedented insight to the dynamics and impacts of hydrological extremes on inhabited prototype landscapes.
Your profile :
- You hold a MSc or equivalent degree in Geoscience, Geography, Hydrology, Geophysics, Physics or a related discipline, clearly with above-average grade.
- You are interested in the instrumentation of natural landscapes, as well as the management and analysis of the resulting large data sets. You are familiar with scripting languages such as R, Python or Matlab. You have a background in process-oriented geomorphology, river and sediment dynamics, or hydrological principles.
- You are open minded and able to think across disciplines. You have an understanding for the connectedness of dynamic landscapes. You can think and work independently, and are willing to collaborate and communicate within a team of researchers with diverse backgrounds.
- You have a very good command of English. A basic level of French would be of advantage.
Your benefits : This PhD will be at the leading edge of the application of geomorphology, geophysics and sedimentology to one of the most important environmental problems of this century. It will give training in field work, instrumentation, data management, and method development using the latest technologies. Through dedicated national and international collaborations, it will provide opportunities to fuse observations and modelling, and effectively build an interdisciplinary network of fellow researchers. You will be enrolled in the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS), safeguarding an efficient soft skill, supervision and tutoring environment. The Faculty offers an interdisciplinary, international environment, in which you can evolve in a creative, supportive, collaborative way.
Application : Please apply by 10 January 2024 with a CV, a short statement on your career and research vision, and copies of relevant certificates, all compiled to a single PDF document. For further information please see the project website
