Executive Publisher, Open Access NPJ series Journals

The Springer Nature Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.
We are looking for a talented individual to take accountability for the commercial success, strategic development and reputation for our portfolio of open access journals in Social and Environmental Sciences, published under the NPJ brand. The NPJs are fully open-access Nature Portfolio academic journals that together span a wide range of research, from fundamental physics to clinical research to engineering. Each NPJ is targeted to a specific scientific community and is launched and run in collaboration with preeminent scientists. You’ll enjoy maximising the efficiency and profitability of the portfolio, building new business through identifying new and changing subject areas and champion the needs of the portfolio, Editors in Chief and sponsoring societies of journals within the portfolio. Using your leadership and influencing skills you will coach and manage the portfolio team to achieve business goals. The responsibilities include:
- Maximize the efficiency and profitability of a portfolio of journals across a wide range of disciplines within the NPJ series team
- Set annual revenue and cost budgets, in cooperation with the Publishing Director, and monitor performance to ensure targets are met, taking corrective action where necessary. Monitor financial performance of journals in the portfolio through regular reporting and forecasting.
- Drive and monitor team performance against the journal development plans
- Monitor and evolve, as needed, the relationships with other departments to ensure that functional tasks, such as technology, marketing, advertising sales, supplements, production, and finance, are undertaken correctly and efficiently
- Contribute to the overall strategy and development of a portfolio of journals in the portfolio developing and implementing the strategic goals, ensuring that these are in line with broader goals of Springer Nature as a whole
- Understand business opportunities and requirements in the key global regions in which Springer Nature operate (including competitors in the region and growth trends)
- Provide line management, coaching and support to a group of Publishers, while demonstrating leadership and influence across the team and throughout the business, as relevant
- Communicate regularly with the Publishers to review progress against objectives and carry out annual performance and development reviews
To be considered for the position, you will have:
- Strong demonstrable experience in STM publishing
- Strong line management experience
- Graduate degree or equivalent
- Excellent communication skills, including oral and written presentation skills
- Customer-focused
- Strong prioritisation and time management skills
- Strong financial skills, including experience with budgeting and P&L oversight
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Enthusiastic and committed
This role can be located in Heidelberg or London (hybrid working available). The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis.
