Institute of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building
We are currently looking for a student assistant in the field of modelling district energy systems. The aim is to set up an IT infrastructure to optimise and control district energy systems as part of the SmartQuart project (https://www.smartquart.energy). The infrastructure set up will be used for real time control of neighbourhood operation, aiming to maximise the usage of renewable energies. Power consumption flexibility is provided for this optimisation by an electrolyser with a hydrogen network (as storage), heat pumps with a heating network and a battery storage system. Live operation comprises 3 steps:
1. Data retrieval from the neighbourhood and calculation of forecasts
2. Optimisation of operations
3. Control of the neighbourhood (data transfer)
During the data query, the storage levels and consumption of the neighbourhoods are transferred. Predictions of future consumption are determined from this data using machine learning algorithms. Based on this data, the operation of the districts is optimised for a specific period. As last step the optimisation results are transferred to the districts as system operation schedules. The Chair of Energy Efficient Building E3D focuses on the energy modelling and simulation of buildings and urban districts, the development of numerical models, building information modelling (BIM), the modelling and simulation of building physics processes, energy monitoring and research into user behaviour and thermal ergonomics, including physiology and sensor technology. The chair is an interdisciplinary team and offers basic and industry-oriented research, international contacts and a modern working environment with some unique test facilities.
- Ideally programming knowledge in Python
- Basic knowledge in the field of neighbourhood energy supply or energy systems is advantageous
- Systematic and structured working methods
- Data preparation (basic knowledge or interest)
- Working with databases and data retrieval via API (basic knowledge or interest)
- Good communication skills
- Enrolment for a degree course at a university or university of applied sciences
- Participation in setting up the real-time operation of the optimisation models for the district energy systems (Python)
- Participation in the implementation of database calls in the optimisation model
- Support in the creation, testing and implementation of machine learning forecasting models
- Interest-based support with other programming tasks
