Junior/Senior UX Designer (m/f/d) - Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence in Berlin bei European Institute for Participatory Media
The European Institute for Participatory Media e.V., located in Berlin, is a network institute with extensive expertise in applied research and participatory development of digital innovations and socio-technical systems addressing societal challenges, including human-centered AI. This includes research on reflective design of AI systems that help users understand and use AI responsible, prevent and/or counter the spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech. This is accompanied by the development of new approaches to AI literacy and AI capacity building, intelligent persuasive systems for behavioural change and sustainability and innovative solutions for science communication using explainable AI.
EIPCM has undertaken award-winning projects and collaborated with over 100 international partners to deliver both innovative research results as well as innovative solutions applied in real-world practice. Our research and innovation projects involve partnerships with universities, research institutes, companies, and public institutions across various European countries (see http://eipcm.org/network). Our scientific council includes renown personalities from cutting-edge research on AI, HCI and user-centered and trustworthy AI .
Some of our recent projects include:
- AI-CODE: fighting disinformation by developing a new ecosystem of tools and services supporting media professionals in trusted information production through AI (funded by the European Union)
- iKIDO: Supporting AI literacy through the development of novel interactive solutions empowering young adults to transparently experience AI methods and understand the potentials and risks of AI.
- Reflective AI: Developing a new framework for the development and use of AI technologies, focusing on harnessing benefits and preventing harmful effects.
- XAI4COVID: Applying AI explainability techniques to enhance the public communication of scientific knowledge during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are currently inviting highly motivated and qualified individuals to join our dynamic team as Junior/Senior UX Designer (m/f/d) in Human-centered AI for the AI-CODE project in collaboration with world-class research institutes, AI companies, fact checking and media organisations (e.g. Deutsche Welle).
Key Responsibilities:
- Creating mockups and prototypes for an interactive tool enabling journalists, media professionals and fact-checkers to understand the main mechanisms of generative AI and learn effective prompt engineering techniques for LLMs (e.g. AI-assisted iterative prompt optimization),
- Designing use cases for an application demonstrating how media professionals can harness generative AI responsibly to identify and counter misinformation and harmful content, while ensuring transparency and trustworthiness (e.g. based on retrieval augmented generation),
- Conducting prototype testing with media professionals, gathering feedback, and implementing improvements,
- Application of user-centered design and human-centered AI methods and knowledge to the design of the interactive coaching tool for responsible use of generative AI,
- Applying ethics by design principles in the design process of human-AI interaction.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Completion of a relevant university degree
- Knowledge of and experience with different types of prompt engineering techniques
- Experiences with prototyping for web development and with user-centered design methods and principles
- Familiarity with generative AI tools (e.g. Perplexity, Cohere Generate, Stable Diffusion, etc.)
- Conceptual, analytical and creative problem solving skills
- Basic programming skills (e.g., Python, HTML/CSS, JavaScript) are an advantage
- Flexible thinking and pragmatic working style in finding creative solutions to practicalities of real-world projects
- Team player with high degree of self-initiative
- Growth mindset
- Excellent communication skills in English (speaking & writing)
- Knowledge of German (B1 and higher) is an asset
