The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Background Over the next three years the data competence center for Bremen “DataNord” will be established as an interdisciplinary project with close relationships to the National Research Data Infrastructure NFDI. In “DataNord” the members of the U Bremen Research Alliance – the cooperation network of the University of Bremen, the Alfred Wegener Institute - Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and 11 non-university research institutes – work together with other regional institutions. In total, the “DataNord” team will consist of 15 people who will be spread across the partner institutions and will work closely together.
One of the data scientist positions will be located at the AWI but co-supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uta Bohnebeck - Informatics/Data Science (Hochschule Bremen) and Prof. Dr. Betina Hollstein – social sciences (Qualiservice/Universität Bremen).
The data used in this research project originates from the PANGAEA (www.pangaea.de) and Qualiservice (www.qualiservice.org) repositories. Both are internationally recognized specialist repositories for earth and environmental research as well as qualitative social science research. They serve as models for researching the re-use of published data for the application of machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence. The goal of this project is to showcase transformation of high-quality data into innovative research.
Tasks We are looking for a motivated data scientist who is willing to take advantage of the large corpus of curated data already available in two internationally leading repositories PANGAEA and Qualiservice to research the following topics as part of the DataNord “SmartReps” project:
- How can AI/ML methods be used to support our users when submitting data to the repositories?
- How can AI/ML methods be used to support our editors when curating the data?
- To what extent can trustworthiness be established for these AI/ML methods?
- What are the costs (energy consumption, complexity) to benefit ratio of AI/ML methods compared to classical e.g. statistical methods
Requirements - Master in computer science, or natural science with knowledge and practical experiences in AI/ML methods
- Experiences in managing data
- Programming skills
- Motivated teamplayer
- Very good presentation and communication skills
- Fluent in English and at least basic knowledge in German
