Europa-Universität Flensburg seeks to fill the following position in Faculty III by July 1, 2024:
Postdoctoral Research Associate (d/m/f)
The position is based at the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Studies (ICES) as part of the Interreg-funded project ClimatePol – Climate Adaptation and Policy Across the Border, co-led by Emanuel Deutschmann (Assistant Professor at EUF’s Sociology Department) and Dorte Jagetic Andersen (Associate Professor at the Centre for Border Region Studies at the University of Southern Denmark). The project takes place in collaboration with the Center for Border Region Studies (CBRS) at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg. The advertised position is based at Europa-Universität Flensburg and available for a fixed term of 15 months. Afterwards, an appointment at the CBRS for 12+3 months (the second half of the project period) is envisaged by the University of Southern Denmark.
The successful applicant will be mapping governance structures, stakeholder compositions and additional framework conditions for climate adaptation in the Danish-German border region. This will include desktop work, interviews and other qualitative methods employed in engagement with a broad range of stakeholders from public administration, civil society, businesses, and educational institutions. Moreover, the applicant should assist in the aim of developing a best-practices handbook on climate adaptation measures for policymakers, as well as new knowledge of the role national borders play in the green transition.
Key responsibilities:
- Conduct and contribute to the collection of data for the research project. The candidate must therefore by willing to engage with and navigate between a broad range of stakeholders with different interests.
- Analyse the data and disseminate the research results through the development of digital tools, best-practice documents, as well as academic publications
- Contribute to the organization of events and activities within the project
- Participate in regular meetings in the ClimatePol project
- Present papers at conferences
- Perform a number of research-related tasks such as engaging in knowledge exchange activities with the surrounding society. This also includes contributing to media content aimed at public outreach.
Position requirements:
- A PhD in sociology, political science, geography, social philosophy, or related fields, showing performance at the highest academic standards
- Research expertise using qualitative methods (including interviews)
- A proficient or near-proficient speaker/reader of English as well as Danish and German, the two languages relevant to the regional contexts investigated
- An emerging publication record at an internationally recognized level
- Experience with and interest in public outreach and communication as well as knowledge-sharing activities and/or cooperation with external partners
Desired qualifications:
- Research expertise regarding cross-border cooperation and/or network analysis
- Research expertise in the Danish-German border region
- Research expertise in relation to the Green Transition
- Experience with Interreg projects generally
