Its Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI researches and develops special problem solutions at the interfaces of medicine, life sciences and engineering.
For our research group »DNA Nanosystems« we are looking for a student assistant at the Leipzig site to join our team as soon as possible. The group deals with the generation of DNA nanostructures and their functionalization with various (bio)molecules for later application in diagnostic and immunological questions.
What you will do
You will support our interdisciplinary and international team in three different research projects. Your tasks will include the following:
- You will dissociate malignant and healthy tissue into single cells.
- You will analyze cells using flow cytometry and deformation cytometry.
- As part of cell culture and cell co-culture work, you will be responsible for passaging, cryopreservation and cell counting.
- You will plan, carry out and evaluate molecular biology work such as the determination of DNA concentrations or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE).
What you bring to the table
- You are an enrolled student of life sciences and have already completed your Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology or a related degree program.
- You have already gained practical experience in molecular biology work and cell culture (pipetting, preparing buffers, sterile work, etc.). Knowledge of handling primary tissues and performing flow cytometry measurements is desirable.
- You are confident in communicating in English and in using common PC applications.
- You approach challenges with curiosity and analytical skills and quickly find your way into new methods and topics through your technical understanding.
- You score points with your ability to tackle problems on your own initiative and by critical thinking, to structure your tasks independently and to prioritize them sensibly.
As part of the selection process, it would be desirable for you to be available for a half-day trial work. Newly recruited student assistants have the opportunity to write their Master's thesis in the working group at a later point.
What you can expect
- Thanks to our close links with industry, creative research freedom meets real added value. Through your work, you will help shape the medicine of tomorrow and gain exciting insights into the leading organization for application-oriented research in Europe.
- You will get valuable preparation for future research positions through a practice-oriented and study-complementary activity in which you will apply a variety of relevant scientific techniques. During your time with us, we offer you personal supervision at eye level and teach you how to manage and carry out experiments and projects independently in a short space of time.
- We guarantee creative and innovative projects with a certain freedom of action and access to advanced technologies for biological and biochemical analysis.
- With flexible working hours that fit in with your studies, we enable you to manage your time freely and independently.
- Additional benefits: Free and secure car and bicycle parking and discounted employee prices in the institute canteen.
The position is initially limited to one year. The weekly working hours are subject to individual agreement. Remuneration is based on the general agreement on the employment of assistant staff.
