HPC Administrator and Cloud Engineer
We are looking for a hybrid High Performance Computing (HPC) Administrator and Cloud Engineer to design, manage and support an existing HPC system. Additionally, we are seeking to migrate some components to the AWS cloud and re-architect for optimal solutions for a hybrid system. The role will closely work with scientists and researchers to design, implement, and operate well architected and secure environments. Those environments will address their needs arising in the context of scientific computing and will cope, not only with compute aspects, but also data operation demands.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and maintain the hardware requirements for a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Environment, including data storage and backup, using on-premises, virtualization and cloud technologies where applicable
- Maintain Linux based system software and firmware revisions, including patches, updates, and OS upgrades
- Manage the day-to-day system administration of Linux-based cluster computing and storage environments, and associated network infrastructure, in alignment with corporate, contractual and security requirements and solve Linux system hardware, software, and third-party software issues, and provide detailed and thoughtful analysis of problems and solutions
- Design and develop scripts for Linux cluster system administration, security, monitoring, scheduling, policy enforcement and usage reporting and be responsible for all aspects of management and configuration of batch scheduling system–currently PBS–for efficient resource allocation and job scheduling across the cluster
- Design, tune, and manage parallel file systems, distributed computing, storage and data-oriented resources, cluster solutions integration and administration, interconnect fabrics and software stack
- Integrate local HPC resources with cloud HPC services, cloud bursting, and other cloud services, help migrate existing workflows from on-prem to cloud by designing and building appropriate solutions and use containers and container management tools
- Meet highest security and availability standards in alignment with all relevant Bayer policies, ensure compliance with all license agreements of scientific software packages and manage contract negotiations with hardware and software vendors
- Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides to facilitate knowledge sharing and team collaboration and develop user facing documentation with a focus toward knowledge sharing
WHO YOU ARE
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related area of study with Linux system administration experience, including being familiar with HPC systems and profound knowledge of Linux shell scripting
- Knowledge of python and C/C+ (R, FORTRAN, PERL, NIM, Julia, are a plus)
- Proficient use of version control systems (e.g., GitHub, etc.) and container (e.g., Docker, Singularity) creation, management, debugging and deployment
- Know-how in installing applications, including compiling, and linking, and deploying license servers and with HPC and batch queueing systems like PBS
- Ability to design and build scalable services on at least one major CSP - AWS, GCP, Azure and being experienced with Infrastructure as Code, e.g., terraform or CloudFormation, is a plus
- Be proficient in Identity, Security Architecture, Configuration management, Security and Network Security
- Strong understanding of cluster resource managers, schedulers, cluster ware and GPU computing
- Fluent in English, spoken and written
