Job Advertisement P 148/2023
The University of Rostock offers a diverse, varied and demanding job in a tradition-conscious, yet innovative, modern and family-friendly university in a lively city by the sea.
At the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institute of Biology, working group Animal Physiology, subject to allocation of funds, we are filling the following position at the earliest possible date on a temporary basis for the duration of the DFG-project of 3 years:
Research Assistant (m/f/d)
EG 13 TV-L, part-time employment, 26 hours/week, limited, qualification position
Current research emphasises the importance of ambient temperatures on movement, its control and dynamics in terrestrial arthropods. The central goal of the Project is to determine how parameters like body size, developmental stage, sex and the number of propulsive legs, i.e. the structure of the locomotor apparatus, affects locomotion and body dynamics under different temperature regimes. For a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms, it is further planned to determine contraction properties of major muscles involved in the leg’s movements. Both should be considered together with the ecological conditions under which the respective species typically live.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- research in the field of multi-legged locomotion with the aim of scientific qualification (doctorate) as part of the project "Experimental determination of the impact of ambient temperatures on leg coordination, force distribution and body dynamics in fast moving arthropods and numerical modelling of polypedal locomotion"
- behavioral experiments on arthropods from laboratory colonies and the wild
- digitizing of video data, histology and imaging, data analysis
- publishing of research results
Requirements
- completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in a relevant zoological field, biophysics or similar
- team player with good experimental skills and a broad scientific interest
- strong interest in research of animal locomotion
- knowledge of the German and English language, both written and spoken
