The climate needs bright minds. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts and sustainable development. Within the BMBF-funded Kopernikus project Ariadne, the “Climate and Energy Policy” Group in Research Domain 3 is looking for a
PhD Student or Research Analyst (m/f/d)
(Position number: 33-2023 PhD/Research Analyst Ariadne)
in one of the following fields:
- EU climate policies, in particular the EU-ETS (methods: applied theory and numerical modelling)
- Energy efficiency in buildings (methods: econometrics and survey-based research)
- Public support for climate policies (methods: econometrics and survey-based research)
in climate and energy economics, starting on 01.09.2023 earliest.
The position is funded for up to 36 months. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 30 hours. Appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency.
Key responsibilities:
- Conduct research that is both policy-relevant and has high academic quality on one or more of the above topics
- Coordinate related project activities
- Disseminate project findings in formats suitable for decision makers (e.g. policy brief) and the broader public (e.g. blog posts)
Requirements:
- MSc in Economics or another social science with a quantitative orientation
- Profound knowledge in one or more of the above topics and related methods, and excellent analytical skills; knowledge of optimization software (GAMS or similar) is an asset
- Academic record that underlines to publish in top-ranked journals in the field of energy & climate economics and policy as well as related interdisciplinary journals

- A high level of proficiency in oral and written English; a basic knowledge of German, or the willingness to acquire it
- Willingness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops etc.)
- Willingness to take over group responsibilities
- Entrepreneurial spirit and organisational talent
