The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is Europe’s leading organisation for Earth, planetary and space science research. Working with our diverse and enthusiastic community worldwide, we promote fundamental geoscience research, as well as applied research that addresses key societal and environmental challenges. EGU’s communication’s team is the link between our volunteer leadership and Divisions, and our approximately 20,000 members, providing updates and information on all the Union’s activities from the annual General Assembly, our Open Access publishing, funding and awards through to Division events and opportunities.
EGU are seeking a creative and motivated Social Media work-student to join EGU’s communications team. The role will be on a flexible, part-time basis ( a maximum of 20 hours per week) and can either be based at the EGU Executive Office in Munich, or fully remote within Germany. As a part of this role, the work-student will occasionally need to travel to events within Europe, for which their accommodation and travel costs will be covered. The successful applicant will be responsible for monitoring the Union’s social media presence, engaging with members online and generating new content that can be used across our social media platforms. They will be supported in this role by EGU’s Head of Communications, Media and Communications Officer and Projects Manager.
Main tasks:
- Monitoring activity and conversations across EGU’s 5 main social media platforms: X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Mastodon
- Scheduling regular posts for these platforms and monitoring engagement metrics
- Answering questions and requests for information on these platforms (during set working hours only)
- Working with other members of the EGU team to generate new content for EGU’s social media platforms, promoting EGU activities and events
Requirements:
- Meet the conditions of the German work-student program (there is a good explanation at https://www.munich-business-school.de/insights/en/2022/what-is-a-working-student/, be living in Germany for the purpose of full-time education)
- Pursuing a graduate degree in the Earth, planetary or space sciences, or a relevant field (such as geography, environmental science, chemistry or communications)
- An understanding of, and interest in, a variety of social media platforms
- Ability to interact with individuals online with sensitivity and professionalism
- Ability to generate text and choose/create basic imagery to clearly communicate event details and/or scientific/technical information to a variety of audiences in a community-focused and engaging way
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative team
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills
- Expert command of English
- Non-European nationals are eligible to apply, providing they meet the other requirements of a work-student in Germany

Salary and starting date:
This position, to start in November/December 2024, will be subject to a 6-month probation period. As per the conditions of the work-student programme, the employee will be limited to 20 hours work per week and will be paid a standard wage of 12.41€ per hour.
