Safe Intelligence - this forms the core brand of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS. Connected cognitive systems drive innovation in many sectors, including mobility, healthcare, and automation in industry. Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing play a key role here. Fraunhofer IKS is conducting research to ensure that these applications are reliable and verifiably safe. We consider resilience and intelligence to be part of the same process.
What you will do
Quantum Computing is a novel, disruptive technology with the potential to tackle problems for example in logistics or molecular simulations. However, it is often difficult for persons that are not experts in the fields to understand its concept and potential benefit. That is why we at IKS develop demo applications on different levels of technical depth.
In this position, we are looking for a motivated student to create a demo application for an audience with little to no expertise in quantum computing (general public, high school students, etc.). The idea is to demonstrate basic concepts of quantum computing such as the probability distributions of measuring qubit states after applying a series of quantum gates. Most importantly, the demo requires an interactive graphical user interface (GUI), the visualization of probabilities, and some elements of a game or quiz. The code to perform the quantum operations themselves will be provided, so basic knowledge of quantum computing is helpful, but not mandatory. The demo will be displayed at workshops, conferences, science days, or other events.
What you bring to the table
- Very good coding skills in Python, experience in JavaScript can be helpful
- Experience in building GUIs with various interactive elements, e.g. using PyQt
- Basic experience with Linux environments and continuous integration (GitLab)
- First experience with the creation of web applications, e.g. using Python Flask API
- Very good English skills, German is a plus
- Basic knowledge of quantum computing is a plus.
What you can expect
- Individual mentoring, a positive working environment in a young, dynamic team, and a flexible work model
- Acquiring hands-on development experience and learning in the field of quantum computing at a highly renowned research institute
- Chance to use your own creativity to enable a fun user experience
- Chance to work on a project with high visibility.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
