In cooperation with the department of Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the "Joining and Cutting" department.
The e-mobility sector is growing steadily, with laser processing of battery materials significantly improving the flexibility and reliability of production. Laser cutting of electrode foils is increasingly being used in battery production. The development is aimed at maximizing cutting quality and speed. However, the requirements for the cutting process vary depending on the electrode design and chemistry. Continuous compliance with high standards of process stability and product quality is therefore a major challenge for manufacturers. The Fraunhofer ILT is developing innovative monitoring and control methods for next-generation production systems.
What you will do
- The work aims to apply the MILM (minimally invasive power modulation) process control approach developed at the ILT to the field of battery foil cutting
- Equipping a laser cutting system with suitable sensors,
- Recording and analyzing the process signals
- Investigation of the correlation with the process result, development of a suitable modification of the approach
- Training of AI-based algorithms and their monitoring
What you bring to the table
- You are studying engineering or natural sciences
- You are inquisitive, reliable and characterised by experimental skills
- Knowledge of programming and laser technology is an advantage, but not essential
What you can expect
- Practice-orientated thesis in an innovative working environment
- A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
- Excellent machinery and equipment
- Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
- Good transport links (bus connection, free car park)
- Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
- Corporate benefits
